The first female Director General of MI5, Stella Rimington was also the first to have a strong public image, appearing at the launch of a brochure which discussed the organisation’s function and generally providing a trusted public face for a service which had often seemed cloaked in mystery.
During her four years as Director General of MI5 between 1992 and 1996, she became well known to the people of Britain and the wider world. Since her retirement, she continues to capture the popular imagination through her books; now a successful author, many of her novels are thrillers focusing on the world of spies and intelligence officers. Her bestselling first book, ‘At Risk’, dealt with the pressures faced by a female officer and her struggles to carry out her job in an environment in which sexism is very real. In addition to her writing, Stella Rimington is an Associate Director of CPS Limited, a leadership development and executive support organisation, where she works as a coach and a mentor. A sought after speaker, she is keen to share her knowledge and success strategies, her down-to-earth manner and approachability having seen her work with numerous clients from an array of sectors.
Rimington achieved a post-graduate diploma in the Study of Records and the Administration of Archives at Liverpool University after attending University of Edinburgh. During her early career she worked for the Worcester County Record Office and then the India Office Library in London, before moving to India and finding a part time job with the Security Service in New Delhi.
