Between 2001 and 2005 Mr. Henkel was President of the Leibniz Association which comprises of 84 state-funded research institutions in various scientifc disciplines. Since 2000, he lectures as Professor of International Management at the University of Mannheim.
Mr. Henkel is a member of the Supervisory Boards of Bayer AG, Leverkusen; Continental AG, Hanover; DaimlerChrysler Aerospace AG, Munich; EPG AG, Sarrebruck, SMS GmbH, Düsseldorf; the Swiss publishing company Ringier AG, Zofingen, Orange SA, Paris as well as Brambles, Sydney/London. He is an active member of Amnesty International.
In 1991 Mr. Henkel received an Honorary Doctor’s degree from the Technical University of Dresden, in the same year he was declared "Environmental Manager of the Year“ by the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) and received the “Innovation Award of German Industry” by the Magazine “Wirtschaftswoche”. Since 1998 he published his books “Jetzt oder nie”, followed by three bestsellers: “Die Macht der Freiheit“, „Die Ethik des Erfolgs“ and “Die Kraft des Neubeginns”. He is author of numerous articles in books and periodicals on political issues, business and science. In 2001 he was awarded the “Cicero-Award” (“Best speaker of Germany’s business community”). A year later he received the international writers’ award “Corine” as well as the “Ludwig-Erhard-Award” for his publishing achievements on economic matters. In 2006 Henkel got the “Deutscher Mittelstandspreis”. Together with the Ex-President of the Republic, Roman Herzog, and others he founded the “Konvent fuer Deutschland” which aims at changes to the German political decision making system. In 2005, scientists named a newly discovered butterfly species after him (“Bracca olafhenkeli”).
