Niklas Zennström is one of today’s most successful Internet entrepreneurs, best known for co-founding Skype, KaZaA, Joost and Joltid with his long-time business partner Janus Friis.
In 2007, Niklas co-founded Atomico Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on investing in passionate entrepreneurs building the next generation of consumer-facing technology businesses, and fostering a new ecosystem for entrepreneurship in Europe.
Niklas is best known for having co-founded Skype, the online communications company. Skype offers high-quality voice communications to anyone with an Internet connection anywhere in the world, and quickly become the global leader in Internet voice communications, with over 432 million registered users to date. In September 2005 eBay Inc acquired the company. Niklas held the position of CEO from inception until October 2007.
Prior to Skype, Niklas co-founded and served as CEO of Kazaa, the consumer file-sharing application that became the world’s most downloaded Internet software in 2003, and Joltid, the world’s leader in peer-to-peer technologies. Earlier in his career, Niklas was CEO of the European everyday.com portal, and held various business development roles at get2net, a Danish ISP provider. He started his professional career at Tele2, a pioneering competitive phone company in Europe.
In addition to his business ventures, Niklas and his wife Catherine founded Zennström Philanthropies to direct charitable contributions to the fields of Climate Change, Human Rights and Social Entrepreneurship.
Niklas was recognized by Time Magazine as one of its 100 Most Influential People in 2006, and has received numerous other awards including ‘Business Leader of the Year 2006’ (European Voice), ‘Innovation in Computing and Communications 2006’ (Economist Innovation Awards), the ‘Wharton Infosys Business Transformation Award for Technology Change Agent of the Year’ in 2006, and ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ (European Business Leaders Awards 2006).
Niklas holds dual degrees in Business and MSc Engineering Physics/Computer Science from Uppsala University in Sweden.
