...aster and a member of the RYA and the Naval and Military Club. He read politics at university and joined the Royal Navy to pursue his interest in maritime exploration. He is a keen adventurer and traveller with a special interest in historic “Kon Tiki” type expeditions.
In 2003 Beale left the City to pursue an ambition to build an 8th Century BC Indonesian ship and sail it to West Africa to demonstrate that early Indonesian seafarers could have reached West Africa by sail rather than by land. The Borobudur Ship Expedition as it became known, was successfully completed in late 2004. Philip was awarded Indonesia’s highest honour by President Megawati for services to Indonesian Culture.
Recently Beale created and led The 2008-2010 Phoenician Ship Expedition. The expedition was launched in June 2008 by Syria’s First Lady Asma Assad in Arwad, Syria where the ship was built using ancient Phoenician construction techniques. The purpose of the expedition was to prove that ships constructed by the ancient Phoenicians were capable of undertaking a voyage around Africa in often treacherous conditions. The expedition was also designed to engage, educate and inspire young people in the Middle East through participating in the voyage.
While not at sea, Beale is Managing Director of the adventure travel company Pioneer Expeditions which creates unusual adventures in normally difficult to access places.
Topics
Leadership - Phoenicia was not just a great adventure, it was about inspiring and educating people from all walks of life. Leadership was vital since few crew members had sailing experience and dangerous situations were frequent including treacherous storms and evading Somali pirates.
Team building - A constantly changing international crew joined the expedition during the two year voyage. Philip can explain how it was possible to build and manage the team with their different cultures, ages, genders and nationalities in often challenging conditions.
