... his dogged determination.
Alongside a delegation of sporting luminaries, businesspeople and schoolchildren, Seb showed the importance his team placed on supporting athletes, encouraging more young people to take up sport and regenerating a run-down, multi-ethnic region of the capital. Above all, he inspired the IOC with his vision of the legacy the London Games will leave for future generations.
Seb arrived at the 1980 Moscow Olympics as the world record holder and favourite at 800m. However he ran what he called "the worst race of my life" and finished second behind compatriot Steve Ovett. Six days later, a determined Seb redeemed himself in the 1,500m. During the final curve, he drove past Jürgen Straub and won the gold medal by four metres.
Seb weakened dramatically in 1983 and finally underwent surgery for removal of a lymph node. To the surprise of many observers, he regained his world-class form in time for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Seb won another silver medal in the 800m. Five days later, he entered the final of the 1,500m, where the favourite was his teammate, Steve Cram. As he did in Moscow, Coe sprinted into the lead in the final turn. This time he pulled away from Cram to win by six metres.
Seb is the only male runner to win the Olympic 1,500m twice.
After retiring from competitive athletics, Seb entered politics as Conservative MP for Falmouth and Cambourne. He served as PPS to Michael Heseltine and as a Government Whip, then as Private Secretary to William Hague.
Coe was appointed the first chairman of Fifa's new independent watchdog, the Fifa's ethics commission. The commission will judge all cases alleging conflicts of interest and breaches of Fifa rules. In 2007, Lord Coe was elected a vice-president of the International Association of Athletics Federations.
He is a long-standing advisor to Nike, and founder and owner of the Seb Coe Health Clubs, with a membership of 20,000.
