Dylan Jones is an English journalist and author who served as editor of the UK version of men’s fashion and lifestyle magazine GQ from 1999 until 2021. He is also the chair of London Fashion Week Men’s. He has won the BSME Editor of the Year Award seven times, including five awards for his work at GQ, along with winning Magazine Editor of the Year eleven times, and has been awarded the prestigious Mark Boxer Award, while his book on the former British Prime Minister, David Cameron, was shortlisted for the Channel 4 Political Book of the Year.

Dylan Jones OBE's 2024 biography

Dylan Jones’ background

Dylan is a New York Times bestselling author and has written several critically acclaimed books on subjects as diverse as music and politics, fashion and photography. To name a few, they include “Cameron on Cameron,” a biography of Jim Morrison and arguably most notably ‘David Bowie: A Life’, which became a Sunday Time, Guardian and Times best seller as well as being shortlisted for the NME Best Music Book Awards 2018.

Dylan’s journalistic career began at i-D magazine in 1983; incredibly he was made editor-in-chief of the magazine just a year later, a position he would hold until he was appointed to the same role at Arena in 1987. Concurrent to this, Dylan was a contributing editor to The Face; other notable positions in his career include being associate editor at The Observer Magazine when the publication was relaunched with Simon Kelner and a variety of positions at The Sunday Times.

Dylan moved to Condé Nast and was appointed as editor of GQ in 1999 and immediately brought on board some of the most established writers working in the industry including Dominic Lawson, Will Self, A. A. Gill, Ed Victor and Tom Wolfe. He was the first editor to put David Cameron on the cover of a magazine and employed Boris Johnson as the magazine’s motor correspondent.

He has been integral to the success of London Fashion Week Men’s and has succeeded in establishing the event on a global scale, convincing Burberry, Alexander McQueen and Tom Ford, among many more, to show their collections in the city.

Dylan was awarded an OBE in 2011 for services to publishing.

Since leaving GQ, Dylan has started his own consultancy business, and have moved into television, producing two Paul McCartney documentaries for BBC1, and writing and presenting a highly successful four part music documentary series for BBC2.

Dylan is internationally recognised as a leading authority on print and digital publishing, fashion, branding, international and current affairs, music and lifestyle as an author, broadcaster and journalist. He is an excellent moderator, host and presenter and speaks on leadership, motivation, media, press relations, travel and entertainment. In addition to journalism he has extensive knowledge of Brexit and UK Politics.
