Aimee Mullins's 2024 biography

All about Aimee Mullins

Renowned for her charisma and sporting prowess, Aimee Mullins has succeeded against the odds.

Having had both her lower legs amputated below the knee at the age of one, doctors were uncertain about Aimee Mullins future mobility. With a pair of prosthetic legs, a school age Aimee surprised them all and defied the odds by excelling at sport.

Beginnings

Aimee Mullins was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1976. Although an otherwise healthy baby, she was born without fibulae and as such, her future mobility was in question. In an attempt to allow her a chance of walking with prosthetic legs, doctors removed both her legs below the knee when she was just a year old. They hoped that learning to walk and run on prosthetics from an early age would allow her to become fully coordinated and save her from a life in a wheelchair. They were right.

Early Success

In school, Aimee discovered she had a love for sport and a competitive spirit. She enjoyed biking, football, softball and swimming alongside her friends and classmates. When she was 17 she was awarded a scholarship from the Department of Defence and worked as a security analyst at the Pentagon during summer breaks.

She attended the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and started to compete in sporting competitions. With the help of her coach Frank Gagliano, she trained to be part of the US track team in the 1996 Atlanta Games. She was successful and became the first amputee ever to compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) games. With her sporting prosthetics and physical prowess, she went on to set world records in the long jump, the hundred metre and the 200 metre sprints.

Actress and Model

Her place in sporting history secured, Aimee was in demand for magazine interviews and soon came to the attention of fashion designer Alexander McQueen. He loved her look and in 1999, she made her modelling debut. Following successful appearances in several fashion magazines, Aimee was in People magazines 50 Most Beautiful People in the World.

In 2011, she became L’Oreal’s Global Brand Ambassador, alongside Jennifer Lopez and Gwen Stefani.

Aimee has appeared as an actress in several films. The first of these was Cremaster 3 (2002), a movie directed by Matthew Barney. She has also appeared in several other productions, including World Trade Center, Quid Pro Quo and Agatha Christies Poirot adventure, Five Little Pigs.

Personal and Charitable Interests

Aimee spent several years serving as a vice-president for JOB, a not-for-profit employment service for those with a disability. She was a founding member of the SPIRE Institute, an athletic development centre and is still part of the organisations leadership board. She currently lives in New York City.
