Most large companies treat innovation as theatre. They host hackathons, set up labs, announce partnerships, and run accelerators, ending up with a pipeline of pilots that never reach the P&L. The real problem is converting a corporation’s existing assets into products the market will actually pay for.
Most organisations are built to protect what already works – and that same structural logic systematically crowds out the conditions where genuinely new markets emerge. The processes that govern existing product lines, the approval cycles, the business-case requirements: these are exactly what engineering-led invention cannot survive inside. Understanding that gap – not just naming it – is what most innovation strategies fail to do.
Boards keep approving technology investment while the underlying talent base narrows. Roles go unfilled, women still leave the sector at scale, and the people who could be retrained sit outside the recruitment funnel. The question is no longer whether to invest in digital capability. It is who is in the room when those decisions are made, and who is being trained to deliver them.
Most boards overreact to economic news that will not matter in six months, and underreact to the news that will. A Fed decision or a fresh tariff round lands inside the business as margin compression and forecasts that stop working. Leaders need someone who can tell them which indicators will actually move the next two quarters of performance.
Workforces and customers spend hours a day in environments engineered to capture attention. Leaders sense the cognitive shift but lack a framework for what is happening inside the brains of their people and customers. They need a defensible model of what digital technology is doing to human cognition, and what to do about it.
Most AI investment is sitting between the slide deck and the operating model. Leaders have approved the strategy, but the people meant to use the tools are confused, sceptical, or quietly opting out. Closing that gap is a communications and adoption problem before it is a technology one, and very few organisations are treating it that way.
Boards convene leaders, clients and journalists in the same room and need a chair who can hold the conversation at the level the material demands. Most events default to an internal host who softens the questions, or a celebrity name who does not understand the brief. The cost is a flat conversation, an unmoved audience, and a missed chance to make the meeting matter.
The integration of brain data, AI, and consumer-grade neurotechnology is moving faster than most senior leaders realise. The organisations engaging with this territory now will set the terms others have to accept later. Most boards do not yet have a real position on it.
Most leadership teams have run their generative AI pilots and now face a harder question: where does the technology actually sit inside the operating model, and which categories of work change shape entirely. The answer is rarely visible from the inside, where vendors pitch tools and consultants pitch frameworks. It comes from people who have built original commercial product with these systems and watched the next layer of human-machine technology arrive in a hospital bed.
Most boards have approved a digital strategy and an AI roadmap. Few can say with confidence what their company would look like if either succeeded. The gap between announced ambition and operating substance is widening, and the leaders most exposed are the ones who treated digital and AI as IT projects rather than as questions about how the business itself runs.
Boards and executive teams now make decisions about AI, data, and digital infrastructure that touch every part of the business. The technical case is well rehearsed. The harder questions, what these systems do to customer trust, to employee agency, to the meaning of the work, get pushed to ethics committees or deferred indefinitely. Leaders need a way to think clearly about technology that is neither uncritical adoption nor reflexive fear.
Most large organisations have built AI proofs of concept, signed cloud contracts, and stood up data teams, yet still cannot point to a measurable change in how decisions are made or where margin is captured. The harder question is which digital capabilities, deployed in which sequence, actually shift competitive position. Buyers want a clear read on where the evidence supports investment and where the hype outruns the data.
