Biography

Michael Portillo brings senior Cabinet-level experience and high-profile broadcasting expertise to audiences seeking informed analysis of politics, economic policy and public affairs.

During his parliamentary career, he held some of the most senior roles in government, including Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Secretary of State for Employment and Secretary of State for Defence. He also served as Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer and contested the Conservative Party leadership, giving him first-hand insight into both government and opposition strategy at the highest level.

His ministerial responsibilities spanned economic management, labour market policy and national security. This breadth enables him to address complex issues such as fiscal policy, public spending, defence strategy and the mechanics of decision-making inside Whitehall with clarity and authority.

Alongside his political career, Michael has built a substantial media presence. He is a long-running panellist on BBC Radio 4’s The Moral Maze and has presented major BBC documentary series, including widely recognised railway journeys programmes. He has also written a weekly column for The Sunday Times and served as theatre critic for New Statesman.

His experience extends beyond politics and media into governance and public service. He has served as a non-executive director of BAE Systems, chaired judging panels for the Man Booker Prize and the Art Fund Prize, and acted as a Commissioner of the International Commission on Missing Persons. He has also chaired the panel linked to the UK Government’s Catalyst: Endowments initiative and served as President of the charity DEBRA.

The son of a Spanish republican exile and a Scottish mother, educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge, Michael combines intellectual rigour with practical experience of leadership under scrutiny. For organisations navigating political change, economic uncertainty or complex stakeholder environments, he offers structured insight grounded in direct experience at the centre of government and public life.
