Biography

Jean-Claude Trichet is one of the most experienced figures in modern central banking and international financial governance. As President of the European Central Bank and previously Governor of the Banque de France, he led monetary policy at the highest level and shaped the institutional response to systemic financial risk across Europe.

His leadership extended well beyond national boundaries. He chaired the Group of Ten Governors and held senior Basel-based roles coordinating central banks and supervisory authorities globally. He also chaired the European Systemic Risk Board, overseeing macroprudential supervision during a period of significant financial instability.

Earlier in his career, he held senior positions within the French Treasury, including Director of the Treasury, and chaired both the Paris Club and the European Monetary Committee. These roles placed him at the centre of sovereign debt negotiations, international financial diplomacy and European economic coordination.

Following his tenure at the ECB, he chaired the board of Bruegel, the European economic policy think tank, and is recognised as its Honorary Chairman. He is also a member of the Institut de France (Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques) and has received international recognition from leading global publications for his contribution to economic policy and central banking.
