Andy Ayim MBE, CEO of Ayim Limited and founder of the Angel Investing School, answers the question: What does it mean to be authentic in today’s society that often promotes conformity? According to Ayim, authenticity means “being yourself” in a world that often pressures us to conform through social media, workplace cultures, and societal expectations.

Ayim emphasizes that authenticity has become a buzzword, often misused in modern contexts. He traces the concept back to its Greek root “ACos,” meaning genuine and original. To be truly authentic, Ayim recommends three key strategies:

  1. Share your story: Ayim states, “There’s power in your own narrative. People connect emotionally to stories when they understand your background of who you are and why you think the way that you do.”
  2. Identify your values: Clearly define what you stand for and establish personal boundaries.
  3. Create space for self-reflection: Regularly assess whether you’re staying true to yourself and your principles.

Ayim cautions against performative authenticity on social media and conforming to workplace norms that don’t align with one’s true self. He gives examples such as going to the pub despite not drinking or pretending to be interested in football to fit in with colleagues. These actions, while common, can compromise one’s authenticity.
