How to Embrace Equity

Jennifer Willey, a distinguished executive in media and technology and renowned advocate for fearless leadership, delivers an essential message on embracing equity for career success. Drawing from her background and personal mission to help individuals break past self-limiting barriers, Jennifer outlines five actionable strategies that support greater workplace equity, especially for women and marginalized groups.

Five Essential Steps to Embrace Equity

1. Mix the Non-Promotable Work

Jennifer encourages everyone to be mindful about who handles office “housework” tasks—such as organizing events, cleaning up, and sharing meeting notes. She advises women to avoid volunteering for these roles excessively, as they often go unrecognized for promotion. Men and allies should proactively share these responsibilities, supporting a fair division of labor.

2. Hear All Voices

Women are interrupted in meetings at a rate three times higher than men. Jennifer recommends that women assertively reclaim their time when interrupted and that allies intervene to redirect the conversation back to the original speaker. She also suggests that managers engage privately with repeat offenders to foster a more respectful environment.

3. Use Inclusive Language

Language shapes culture. Jennifer emphasizes eliminating gendered phrases like “guys,” “bromance,” or “girl boss.” Negative descriptors such as “bossy” or “abrasive” should be dropped. Leaders are urged to focus on authentic titles and foster communication that includes everyone.

4. Value Talent Based on Talent

Research shows men are often promoted for their potential, while women are promoted based on demonstrated performance. Jennifer calls for balanced evaluation standards, assessing both potential and tangible achievements for all. She encourages women to prepare for conversations that highlight both sides of this equation.

5. Be an Ally

True allyship begins with listening and learning about the experiences and challenges of colleagues. Jennifer reminds both men and women of their responsibility to support not only women in the workplace but also Black women, Latinx women, LGBTQ women, women with disabilities, and veterans. Standing together ensures every voice is valued and heard.

Moving Toward True Equity

Jennifer Willey’s advice champions a culture of fairness and fearless growth. Through thoughtful action, sharing tasks, inclusive communication, fair assessment, and authentic allyship, professionals and organizations can unlock equity and create lasting impact for every member of their teams.

Leaders are tired and teams are out of capacity. The state that everyone keeps calling temporary has become permanent, and most leadership development was not designed for it. The question is no longer how to motivate through one disruption, but how to lead repeatedly when nothing settles.
