Meet Demi Stokes
Demi, born in Birmingham but raised in South Shields, began playing football age eight for Sunderland FC. At 16, she made her senior debut for the club and went on to be part of the Black Cats team that secured a place in the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division as well as winning the Women’s FA Cup in 2009.
Aged 18, she moved to the US on a 4-year scholarship to the University of South Florida, where she was part of the USF soccer team and became an integral member of the starting 11. Whilst overseas, she also played in the Canadian summer league for Vancouver Whitecaps. In her final year of university, Demi made her debut for England, marking the beginning of an incredible international career.
Demi was crucial to England’s U19’s win in the Belarus Euros and the 2009 UEFA Women’s Under 19 championships. She then went on to feature in the 2017 and 2019 Euros, the 2019 World Cup and the unforgettable 2022 Euros, where she helped bring home the gold.
Demi has also represented team GB twice – in 2013, she captained Great Britain to win gold at the Summer Universiade in Russia and was also part of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic GB squad.
Since her debut for Manchester City in 2015 she has won seven trophies with the club, including three Women’s FA Cups, three Continental League Cups and one Women’s Super League title. She made her 150th City appearance during the 2020/2021 season and continues to play a vital role in the Women’s team after signing a two-year extension in 2021.
Outside of football, Demi spends her time cooking, watching boxing and bringing up her son Harlen with fiancée, Katie. She also works closely with Pampers UK, as one of their ambassadors, helping to provide emotional support for families of premature babies, after her own experience at her son’s birth, earlier this year.
