Former Governor of Austria's central bank
Ewald Nowotny is President of the Oesterreichische Gesellschaft für Europapolitik and was Governor of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) and a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB Council) until August 2019.

About Ewald Nowotny
Before his appointment as head of the OeNB in September 2008, Ewald Nowotny held a number of management positions in the financial sector. From 2006 to 2007 he was Director General BAWAG P.S.K. Group, before that – from 1999 to 2003 – Vice President and member of the Board of Directors of the European Investment Bank (EIB) in Luxembourg. From 1971 to 1979 he was a member and later President of the Board of Directors of the Austrian Postal Savings Bank (PSK). In addition, Ewald Nowotny was a member of the supervisory boards of a number of banks and companies between 1992 and 2008 and a member of the OeNB General Council from 2007 to 2008.
Ewald Nowotny was born in Vienna in 1944. He studied law and political science at the University of Vienna and economics at the Institute for Advanced Studies (Vienna) and received his doctorate in law from the University of Vienna in 1967.
From 1968 to 1973, Ewald Nowotny worked as an assistant to Prof. Kurt W. Rothschild at the Institute for Economics and Public Finance at the University of Linz. On his habilitation in Economics and public finance in 1973, followed by research stays and professorships at Harvard University, TH Darmstadt and the Johannes-Kepler University Linz.
From 1981 to 2008, Ewald Nowotny was a full professor at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, where he also held the position of Vice Rector for Finance from 2003 to 2005. In 2008, Ewald Nowotny received an honorary doctorate in social and economic sciences from the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt.
In addition to numerous articles in scientific journals, Ewald Nowotny has published nine books. The 5th edition of his internationally recognized textbook “The Public Sector – Introduction to Finance” (in collaboration with Martin Zagler) was published in 2008.
From 1978 to 1999 Ewald Nowotny was a member of the Austrian National Council. In this role, he chaired the Finance Committee from 1985 to 1999.
Ewald Nowotny was appointed a member of the University Council of the Vienna University of Economics and Business on April 2, 2013. From 1995 to 1999 he was Vice President of the National Economic Society.
Ewald Nowotny has received numerous Austrian and international awards. In 2017 he became a Chevalier of the French Legion d’Honneur.
Ewald Nowotny is married and has one son.
