Steve Backshall MBE: Natural history TV presenter, adventurer, public speaker and author
Steve Backshall is a BAFTA award-winning television presenter and wildlife expert. A household name, Backshall is one of Britain’s most respected television presenters and public speakers.
Backshall’s ability to present complex scientific content in an accessible and engaging manner has succeeded in elevating public awareness towards conservation issues and established him as a leading figure in environmental documentary filmmaking. His unsurpassed wildlife knowledge and dynamic presence makes him a compelling and inspiring speaker with an ability to captivate audiences of all ages.
Backshall is best known for his daring expeditions and captivating television career. He has filmed over 100 hours of children’s wildlife programming (namely his phenomenally successful BBC series
Deadly 60) and continues to present cutting-edge mainstream television, pushing the boundaries of exploration and storytelling for international broadcasters, including the BBC, Channel 5, ABC, PBS and SKY TV. Last year, Backshall travelled across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans for Sky TV’s groundbreaking series Whale, which highlights the plight of endangered marine species. He also returned to BBC One with the second instalment of Our Changing Planet, an ambitious 7-year documentary project tracking the impact of environmental change on critical ecosystems.
Backshall’s passion for the natural world extends beyond the screen. Complimenting his exceptional television career, Backshall is also a best-selling author, with a range of books extending from children’s fiction to adult non-fiction. Additionally, his sell-out theatre show Ocean received high acclaim during tours of both UK and Australia. Having already inspired 100,000 people across the UK, the show continues this autumn.
Backshall’s adventurous exploits extend even beyond these varied creative outlets. He has led overseas expeditions to some of the Earth’s most incredible places in search of new species and broken the World record for fastest time paddling the length of the river Thames. Backshall is an iconic all-action hero whose leisure pursuits include mountaineering, scuba diving and kayaking.
Whether at a corporate event, international conference, science festival, trade show or bespoke masterclass, with key themes of achieving success, personal growth, inspiring motivation and encouraging sustainability, Steve’s charisma and comprehensive knowledge of the natural world leave audiences with a renewed sense of purpose.
