Career

Throughout the 1980s Carmen Reinhart was an important figurehead when she worked as chief economist at the investment bank Bear Sterns. She went on to hold several positions at the International Monetary Fund in the 1990s before moving on to become Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and then Professor of Economics and Director of the Center for International Economics at the University of Maryland.

Since 2012, Reinhart has been Minos A. Zombanakis Professor of the International Financial System at Harvard Kennedy School. She is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research. Her vast economic knowledge has earned her a place on several editorial boards and she has also testified before Congress.

Her bestselling book This Time is Different, which explores boom and bust cycles throughout history, has won the TIIA-CREF Paul Samuelson Award, and in 2011 it won her the Gold Medal in the Council on Foreign Relations Arthur Ross book awards. She has also written several other books and a variety of highly influential academic papers.

Born in Cuba and with a PhD from Columbia University, Carmen Reinhart is currently a Professor of International Finance at Harvard University’s Kennedy School. Her expert areas are macroeconomics and boom to bust cycles, and she is renowned for her understanding of financial crises. As a result, she has a huge amount of influence in policy debates and twice was ranked as one of the 50 Most Influential people by Bloomberg Markets Magazine.

Reinhart is regularly featured in the financial press with major publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Newsweek and The Economist requesting her expertise. Her economic knowledge is not restricted to the USA; her bestselling book This Time is Different – written with Kenneth Rogoff – explores major financial booms and crises all over the world over the course of eight centuries. From government defaults to inflationary spikes, the book covers all types of financial events and proves that the boom and bust pattern is nothing new to our generation.
