Meet Jason Roberts
Jason Roberts MBE is a former Premier League and international striker.
He started his career at Hayes Football Club, following in the footsteps of his uncle, Cyrille Regis.
Jason signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1997/98 and went on to play at Torquay United, Bristol Rovers and West Bromwich Albion where he was bought for a club-record signing fee of £2 million.
He later played for Wigan Athletic, Blackburn Rovers and Reading before he announced his retirement from professional football in 2014.
Jason joined the BBC 5Live 606 team in the summer of 2011 and presented a fortnightly feature on the show’s website. He was a regular on the BBC’s Match of the Day 2, Football Focus and Final Score.
He has appeared on Sky Sports and BT Sport and also presented BBC World Have Your Say. Other appearances include Premier League TV and he now has a weekly Premier League show on Flow Sports in the Caribbean.
In 2007, he founded the Jason Roberts Foundation, a charity that provides educational and sporting opportunities for children and young people in the UK and Grenada. Jason also founded clothing brand, Chess London.
2010 was incredibly memorable for Jason as he was named in that years New Years Honours list for his services in sport in both Grenada and in the UK.
His first documentary, ‘Jason Roberts meets Fabrice Muamba’ was broadcast on the BBC in November 2012. The documentary saw Jason get the first interview with ex-Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba to talk about the moment he collapsed on the pitch, his recovery and how his life had been altered by the incident.
In 2016, alongside his co-host Damien, he launched their radio show ‘The Dugout’, broadcast every Thursday on The Soul Of Grenada Radio 100.7 FM.
In November 2017, Jason was appointed Director of Development at CONCACAF. His role includes focussing on the management and strengthening of the Confederations core development programmes, such as grassroots, coaching and education as well as other professional football development initiatives.
In 2022 he was awarded an Honorary fellowship.
