Wesley Paterson

The most capable person on a leadership team often becomes its bottleneck. Every escalation routes through them, and the organisation slowly loses the ability to function when they are not in the room. Change programmes then stall, because the capacity they depend on was never built into the layer below.

Wesley Paterson shows senior leaders how the reflex to step in and fix things creates dependency and burnout, and sets out a method for building teams that hold their own, drawn from twenty years of consulting and from his book The Hero’s Rope.

Why organisations work with Wesley Paterson

  • The 20 Rescue Behaviors framework from The Hero’s Rope gives a leadership team shared language for naming where decisions bottleneck and who is quietly carrying other people’s work.
  • His examples come from his own account of more than 500 consulting engagements across energy, manufacturing, healthcare and government, which means a plant manager and a deputy minister can both find themselves in the material.
  • He has run the difficult version of change himself. As project lead on RenuWell, converting retired Alberta oil and gas well sites into grid-connected solar, he took the CMC-Canada Project of the Year Silver award and reached the International Constantinus finals.
  • He is accountable to a professional body for how he works. He holds the Certified Management Consultant designation, serves as Vice Chair of the Institute of Certified Management Consultants of Alberta, and assesses other consultants for certification.

Biography highlights

  • President of Paterson Consulting Inc. in Medicine Hat, Alberta, and Vice Chair of the Institute of Certified Management Consultants of Alberta

  • Certified Management Consultant, trained in ISO 20700 through CMC-Global, and a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal

Biography

Every organisation has someone who gets the call when something goes wrong. The call is flattering, and it is almost always answered. Across two decades of consulting in energy, manufacturing, healthcare and government, Wesley Paterson kept finding the same pattern underneath struggling teams: capable leaders who had made themselves indispensable and, in the process, made everyone around them weaker.

The Hero’s Rope, published in April 2026, puts names to the habit. The book sets out twenty rescue behaviours, including the open-door policy that removes any need to think before knocking, and gives leaders a working test for telling helping apart from rescuing. It reached number one in Amazon’s Organizational Change category in launch week. Paterson holds a fourth-degree black belt in Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, and the book takes its central principle from the dojo, where strength is built by adding resistance rather than by taking it away.

The consulting record is what gives the argument its weight. Paterson led the RenuWell project, which converts retired Alberta oil and gas well sites into grid-connected solar and storage, work that won the CMC-Canada Project of the Year Silver award and went through to the International Constantinus finals. Medicine Hat News reported that the project identified more than 25 sites for reclamation. CBC News covered the concept in December 2025.

He is also an examiner of his own profession, sitting as Vice Chair of the Institute of Certified Management Consultants of Alberta and assessing candidates for the CMC designation nationally, and he wrote and teaches the Enhancing Your Organizational Culture™ certificate programme that CPHR Alberta and Medicine Hat College deliver. In June 2026 he closed Oil Sands Canada in Calgary with a keynote on operational resilience in energy.
