Most large organisations are not built to find their next source of growth. They reward people for delivering the plan, not for spotting the opportunity that sits outside it. So the people closest to customers and markets stay quiet, the safe bets win, and the business defends its core while newer rivals take the ground it should have taken first.
Most growth stories are told once a venture has succeeded. The instructive material sits in the years before that, in the founder choices that hold a brand together while a sister business runs out of cash. Buyers commissioning a session on entrepreneurship under personal exposure are looking for that texture, not a polished retrospective.
Digital commerce platforms now sit between most consumer-facing companies and their customers. The operating decisions that matter, around discovery, conversion, and cross-border reach, are increasingly shaped by how a handful of global platforms structure attention and demand. Senior leaders need a working view of that landscape from someone who has built inside it, not described it from outside.
Consumer founders hit a wall when the brand that got them to EUR 10 million cannot carry them to EUR 100 million. The operating muscle, retail relationships and product discipline needed to scale across borders look nothing like the instinct-led decisions that built the early business. Most never make the jump.
Most organisations have run their AI and digital pilots. The hard part now is operating advantage: building products, teams and cultures that hold up when the underlying technology shifts every quarter. Boards want practical innovation discipline, not another futurist preview.
Generative AI has collapsed the cost of producing content, code, and creative output, and most leadership teams still cannot say where it changes their economics. The conversation moves between executive workshop demos and abstract policy debate, with little useful ground in between. Boards need a translator who has run a production business, taught the technology at MBA level, and can describe what changes in the operating model and what does not.
Most organisations can reach customers. Very few keep them. A bad experience now outruns the best campaign, and loyalty is earned one customer at a time.
Most organisations commit to products, propositions, and growth strategies before testing the assumptions those decisions rest on. The result is predictable: offerings that miss the market, business models that erode under competitive pressure, and strategy conversations that consume resource without resolution. The problem is not ambition. It is the absence of a shared, practical framework for designing and testing what the business is actually trying to deliver.
Brands have spent a decade chasing reach through influencers without a clean way to measure what the spend buys them. The bridge between marketing intent and credible voice is still mostly relationship-led, opaque, and hard to scale. Most senior leaders running a brand do not have a working operating view of how the influencer market actually clears.
Most service businesses lose value in the gap between what the owner believes they deliver and what the customer actually receives. In family-run enterprises, pride in the product – and loyalty to the people running it – makes that gap almost impossible to diagnose from the inside. The tension between personal conviction and commercial performance is the defining pressure for any hospitality or service business trying to grow.
Consumer brands built on taste and authority are now competing in an attention economy that rewards volume over judgement. Leaders running them have to protect a point of view while opening the business to new audiences, new formats, and harder commercial targets. Few have done that at the front of a cultural title for 25 years and can say with evidence what actually works.
The 50+ consumer controls a disproportionate share of discretionary spending in most developed markets. Brands still design products and craft messaging as if youth is where growth lives. Entire segments worth trillions are treated as demographic footnotes, served by assumptions about ageing that are fifteen years out of date.
